-D is the “Old Man” of the Sewage Treatment Team; he’s been married for 14 years and has five children (4 biological, 1 adopted). His oldest daughter is studying accounting at the local university, his youngest son just started Kindergarten.
-D is also the most game-obsessed member of the team, both in terms of play and design. Since childhood, he has been playing and inventing games for (oftentimes longsuffering) friends and family. The basic mechanics and design of Articles of War: Privateer were his idea, improved, refined, and visually brought to life by -T and -K. (2022)
-T is the "Young Blood" of the Sewage Treatment Team; he just got married to the love of his life this year. No kids yet ;)
-T has always been excited about new ideas and usually is starting some new project or side hustle. He started out as the creative soundboard for -D but quickly started in with ideas of is own. Often coming up with just the right name, rule, or idea, he was soon made part of the team (which he later named). (2022)
It’s a fair question. Who picks a name like that for their boardgame company? Are they trying to be funny? Are they trying to be gross? Are they just trying to be memorable?
Well, a little of all three. But it’s also a true story: -D and -T work at the same place for their day job, and that place happens to be closely situated to a real-life sewage treatment plant. When the winds are right, passing through the parking lot becomes very interesting. So, that was the inspiration for the name: -T saying to -D “What about Sewage Treatment Games?”
-D, being the armchair philosopher he is, immediately started riffing on that idea. “You know, it’s a great name for a small startup game company. I mean, sewage treatment is one of the most important but least thought about parts of the water utility system. We all rely on it every day, but few appreciate it. It deserves more attention than it gets.”
Then, in his way, -Dbegan to drift away into absolutely aimless musing. “Sewage treatment is the way we make contaminated water suitable for release back into the environment, right? Well, games do that too, but they do it with our lives. I’ve seen it with my kids: Healthy play cleanses life.”
